How Does Dermarolling Increase The Effectiveness Of Minoxidil?

Dermarolling (also known as microneedling) has become a widely used, safe, non invasive procedure for several dermatological conditions. Dermarolling can be done at different depths (needle lengths) and different depths have different mechanisms of action and utility. With respect to hair loss, the mode of action that appears most effective is improving the transdermal absorption of topical products.

Studies show that the optimal Dermaroller needle length for increasing the absorption of transdermal medicines (in our case, minoxidil, or other topicals for hair loss) is ~.2mm. Dermarollers of this length have been shown to increase the absorption of topicals by up to 4 times, see study.

In one study using a dermarolling procedure in combination with minoxidil increased hair growth by 3 times. 82% of patients receiving dermarolling felt they achieved greater than a 50% benefit in their hair compared to just 4.5% receiving minoxidil alone. Physicians rated the improvements similarly. Hair counts were increased in the dermarolling group compared to the minoxidil alone group by 3 times (91.4 vs 22.2 respectively) see study here. See further dermarolling studies here and here.

Deeper dermarolling with needles of length >= .5mm can also be performed, however these longer needles tend to permeate the vascular layer and cause bleeding. We consider dermarolling done at this depth to be a surgical procedure which should always be done under medical sterility at a dermatologist's office.

With a .2mm needle dermaroller, such as the one we sell from Dermaroller Germany, the needles only penetrate the epidermis, never entering the blood supply. This makes the procedure minimally invasive, relatively painless and allows the activity to be performed several times a week increasing the absorption of topicals each time they are applied. Deeper dermarolling performed in a dermatologist's office has its place, however, it simply cannot be done at the same frequency as a .2mm procedure. It is usually done at a frequency of ~1 time per month. This frequency and depth has other benefits for hair loss but does not support the absorption of daily topicals like low depth rolling does.

There is strong scientific evidence suggesting dermarolling is a highly beneficial part of any hair loss prevention regimen. Hair Supply only sells the original Dermaroller from Dermaroller Germany. The needles of this product are made from surgical grade stainless steel and manufactured in Germany under sterile laboratory conditions. The Dermaroller comes in a kit which includes a jewel case to protect the needles from damage when not in use and a non alcohol based cleaner. You can read more about the Dermaroller kit here. The protocol we recommend can be found on the product page. If you have questions, as always, feel free to get in touch with us.
